Are you a happy owner of a youngster? Or maybe a friend bought one and asked you for help with working with it? What to do with it, how to start. The most important question is WHEN TO PUNISH AND WHEN TO REWARD...
What matters when working with a young horse is knowing when it is bad and when it is good. An unskilled rider has trouble finding the limits of decency in following commands, so today you will receive from me quick shots and guidelines regarding the basic first weeks of working with a young horse (ridden and walking in three gaits):
Isn't he standing? He has to stand. Teach your horse to stand alone - tutorial on our TikTok.
Isn't he going? He has to go. Responding to aids is a key task for your horse.
He's not going where I want him to go? He has to go wherever I want. But be calm ad patient with him!
He doesn't gives his legs? Work on it calmly, without stress - ask for a little more every day, and after 2 weeks he will start giving it to you.
Does he turn in one direction when getting in? Ask someone on the ground to gently hold his shoulder and rump on the side he's turning towards.
Are you sitting? The horse has to stand. Isn't he standing? You ask him to stand as long as he is able to stand longer on loose reins.
Is he going at his own pace? Try riding at a slow walk, a slightly faster walk and standing for a long time.
Don't want to turn? Make small figure eights at the walk.
Doesn't listen to your help? Surprise him, make tight turns (as long as you do it at a slow pace!), make transitions and make unexpected stops
Pat after each correctly performed above exercise. Not with candy, just a gentle pat on the neck. Dissolving your horse with sweets is a problem that is difficult to eliminate.
Here are 10 quick shots that everyone can do. Good luck and see you on the next list!
